Charles's Starter 5.0
Charlesâs Law: V1/T1 = V2/T2 (Pressure stays constant)
1) Formula + How to Solve Any Variable
Use Charlesâs Law when pressure stays constant:
V1 / T1 = V2 / T2
- Step 1 Convert temperatures to Kelvin first.
- Step 2 Cross-multiply: V1 Ă T2 = V2 Ă T1
- Step 3 Isolate the missing variable:
- Solve for V2: V2 = V1 Ă (T2 / T1)
- Solve for V1: V1 = V2 Ă (T1 / T2)
- Solve for T2: T2 = T1 Ă (V2 / V1)
- Solve for T1: T1 = T2 Ă (V1 / V2)
2) Temperature Rule (Always Kelvin)
Even if the problem gives temperatures in °C, you must convert:
K = °C + 273
- Convert T1 and/or T2 to Kelvin before plugging into the formula.
- If the unknown is a temperature, your final answer should still be in Kelvin.
3) Difference + Percent Error (When Experimental Data Is Provided)
- Theoretical = what you predict using the formula.
- Experimental = what you measured (from a data chart).
- Difference = |theory â experimental|
- Percent Error = (Difference á theory) à 100
Tip: Percent error is only meaningful when you have a theoretical value to compare to an experimental value.
1 question per run. A random scenario is selected from a bank of 3.
This question has 3 answer boxes:
(A) Theoretical V2 (mL), (B) Difference (mL), and (C) Percent Error (%).
You earn credit for each box that is correct. Score appears only at the end.
