Reading an Analog Clock
Learn to read the hour, minute, and second hands.
Reading an Analog Clock
An analog clock uses hands that move around a circle to show time.
- The hour hand shows the hour.
- The minute hand shows the minutes after the hour.
- The second hand shows the seconds.
Brief History of the Modern Analog Clock
The modern clock developed from early mechanical clocks in Europe.
- Peter Henlein helped create early portable clocks in the 1500s.
- Pendulum clocks became more accurate in the 1600s.
- Modern analog clocks use rotating hands to show time on a numbered face.
The Second Hand
The thin, fast-moving hand shows seconds.
- The second hand moves every second.
- One full turn around the clock equals 60 seconds.
- The second hand is usually the fastest hand.
The Minute Hand
The longer hand shows minutes.
- The minute hand points to minutes after the hour.
- Each number counts by 5 minutes.
- One full turn around the clock equals 60 minutes.
The Hour Hand
The short hand shows the hour.
- The hour hand moves slowly.
- It points near the current hour.
- When it is between numbers, the hour has already started.
